Dr. Massey has been teaching at ENC since 2004 and currently serves as Chair of the Psychology Department and Program Director of the Master’s program in Marriage and Family Therapy. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in psychology from ENC, his Master’s and Doctoral degrees in clinical psychology at the Derner Institute at Adelphi University, and completed his internship and fellowship from NYU College of Medicine.
Prior to returning to ENC to teach, Dr. Massey worked in metro New York leading up to and following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, which including serving as coordinator for a large-scale trauma counseling outreach program for all those affected by the WTC attack and a trauma-informed treatment and research program for children and adolescents directly impacted by psychological trauma. In addition, he was involved in clinical services and research with first responders exposed to psychological trauma, leading to presentations and publications in this area. His current clinical and research interests include altruism and prosocial behavior, implicit racial bias and the use of deadly force by police, group dynamics, psychopathy, and psychodynamic and systemic therapy with individuals, couples and families.
Dr. Massey’s love of teaching at ENC is nourished by the ongoing opportunities to integrate psychology and faith, to share life with wonderful colleagues and students, and to mentor students on their journey through college and beyond. He considers it an honor to be able to see students flourish intellectually, professionally, interpersonally, and spiritually in this uniquely vibrant community. He lives on the South Shore with his wife, Laurie O’Brien Massey, ENC alumna and pediatrician, and his daughters, Emma and Grace. When not working, he loves getting outside into God’s creation, playing the drums, and spending time with his family.
