Eastern Nazarene College Announces Autism Endorsement Sequence for Educators

May 23, 2024

Eastern Nazarene College (ENC) will offer an Autism (ASD) Endorsement sequence for licensed educators.

This sequence is available to teachers with both Special Education and general licensure looking to increase their understanding of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Early diagnosis and increased recognition, among other factors, have led to the rise of students diagnosed with ASD in school systems.

Given the increase, students with ASD are increasingly taught in general education classrooms among their neurotypical peers. This course sequence is designed for teachers and educators who seek to understand their students with ASD and improve learning outcomes.

This course sequence is considered continuing education credits for licensed teachers and not a track or specialization for those pursuing a degree, despite being available as part of the Master of Education at the College.

“In response to the growing need for specialized training, we are excited about the new program we developed to help teachers understand and address the behavioral, academic, and physiological needs of students with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD),” says Dr. Robert Purpura of ENC’s Teacher Education Program. “We look forward to supporting our teachers and their students.”

Licensed educators who participate in the sequence will gain an in-depth understanding of autism spectrum disorders, clinically and socially, and their impact on the classroom, including optimal classroom arrangement. Evidence-based assessment of unique academic, social, emotional, and cognitive skills and strengths of ASD students are implemented in the coursework to familiarize teachers with assistive devices, methods, strategies, and language; while preparing them for collaboration with Individualized Education Plan (IEP) professionals and student assessments.

To learn more about this program, contact Dr. Robert Purpura at robert.g.purpura@enc.edu or (617) 745-3587.
