Yerxa Lecture Series Welcomes Boston University Professor Dana L. Robert

Eastern Nazarene College will present a free history lecture by Boston University School of Theology Professor Dana L. Robert on March 30, 2016 at 7:00pm in the Ruth Cameron Auditorium located in the Mann Student Center. The lecture, which will address the topic “Cross-Cultural Christian Friendships in the Age of Nationalist Revolution, 1950s-1970s”, is part of the annual Donald A. Yerxa Lecture in History series

Dr. Robert is Truman Collins Professor of World Christianity and History of Mission, and Director of the Center for Global Christianity and Mission. Her research and teaching interests span the fields of mission history, the history of world Christianity, and mission theology. Her books include Christian Mission: How Christianity Became a World Religion (Wiley-Blackwell, 2009), now in its seventh printing; Converting Colonialism: Visions and Realities in Mission History, 1706-1914 (editor, Eerdmans 2008); African Christian Outreach: Vol. 2 Mission Churches. (editor, South African Missiological Society, 2003); and the now classic American Women in Mission: A Social History of Their Thought and Practice (Mercer University, 1997). She wrote the study Joy to the World!: Mission in the Age of Global Christianity for the 2010-2011 summer schools of mission for The United Methodist Church. In 2011 she delivered a keynote address at the Global Christian Forum in Manado, Indonesia. In 2010 she delivered the Alexander Duff and the Henry Drummond Lectures in Scotland, the opening keynote lecture at the historic Edinburgh 2010 conference, and the Henry Martyn Lectures at Cambridge University.

At Boston University she has directed seventy doctoral dissertations, and former students hold teaching and ministry positions around the world. In addition to STH, she is a member of the core faculty in African Studies and the Graduate Division of Religious Studies. Robert received her BA from Louisiana State University and her MA, MPhil, and PhD from Yale University.

The Donald A. Yerxa Lecture in History was established in 2010 to honor the career of Yerxa, who taught at ENC from 1977 to 2014. An ENC graduate, Yerxa served in a number of capacities at the college, including as chair of the History Department and director of the Pre-Law and Honors programs. He received multiple awards for teaching excellence and received ENC’s Alumni Achievement Award in 2004. In 2009, he was named professor emeritus of History.
