Veritas News Awarded Honorable Mention
Published: April 16, 2013
The Veritas News, the student newspaper of ENC, was awarded an honorable mention by the New England Society of Newspaper Editors in the New England College Newspaper of the Year category. Editor-in-chief Cody Shepard (14) and his staff accepted the award at a May 2 ceremony in Dedham, MA.
Criteria for the award is based on design, editing, writing, coverage, and service to the readership and is judged by a panel of regional editors.
“To be rewarded for the hard work my staff and I have put in this year is truly a blessing,” said Shepard, who will serve as the Editor-in-Chief for a second time next academic year. “I am already looking forward to next year, in which we will continue to take forward strides and place in the competition, not just receive an honorable mention.”
The Veritas News is produced through a combination of paid student editors and writers, and members of the Editing and Publishing course, taught by Fitzgerald. Articles written for the course are submitted to the Veritas News as part of the students’ classwork. The new publishing model with the faculty oversight has inserted a strong academic component to the newspaper for journalism students.
“All credit here has to go to the Veritas staff and the students in Editing and Publishing,” said Fitzgerald. “I am continually impressed by their excitement for their work and the way that excitement manifests itself in the quality of the product they produce issue after issue.”
Other college recipients include first-place Quinnipiac University, second-place Brandeis University, third-place Stonehill College, and fellow honorable mention recipient Emerson College.
The Veritas News publishes a few print issues each year and regularly publishes online for ENC students and employees. The Veritas article on this award is available here (NetID password protected).
