Multicultural Education Programs

Developmental Programs
Positively Assisting Successful Students (PASS)
The Center for Academic Success and the Office for Multicultural Affairs has joined together to design a program to positively engage our new ENC Freshman class. We are initiating a Mentor Program called Positively Assisting Successful Students (PASS). In this program, the freshman will be assigned to a Faculty or Staff member that volunteers to be a Mentor. Also in this program, all of our incoming freshman will be assigned to a selected, trained upperclassmen who will serve as a Peer Mentor. Some of their responsibilities will include showing them different aspects of campus, providing direction, advice, etc.
The mission of PASS is to enhance student development through relationships, communication, and leadership in the transition process for freshman students. The program is dedicated to encourage self-determination, independence, and problem-solving through interactions and reciprocal relationships between mentors and mentees.
So let’s not allow ourselves to get fatigued doing good. At the right time we will harvest a good crop if we don’t give up, or quit. Right now, therefore, every time we get the chance, let us work for the benefit of all, starting with the people closest to us in the community of faith. Galatians 6:9-10
Sista Circle
A regular gathering of “Sistas.” Discussions and prayer focus on issues relating to women of color.
Educational Programs
Multicultural Curriculum Transformation Institute
Every year, faculty members from across the college come together under the direction of trained leaders to transform the syllabus of one of their courses to be multicultural.
The goal of the Institute is help good educators make the transition from “tried-and-true” – and culturally bound – methods and content to a broader repertoire, which includes some of the best of current practices to be relevant to students coming from a broad variety of ethnicities, national backgrounds, economic circumstances, religious traditions, personal learning differences, and personality types.
Sandwich Seminars
Bring your lunch to the President’s Dining Room. Programs include lectures and discussions around multicultural issues. Lectures include the exploration of multicultural issues from a particular academic discipline. Discussions include current hot topics.
Cultural Programs
We host specific events that provide awareness and recognition of multicultural issues, and celebrate individual cultural groups. Throughout the year, the Office for Multicultural Affairs organizes social events that are of special interest to students of color. See the calendar for up to date listing of events.
