Theatre Department Presents ‘Stories of God’

Published: January 23, 2012

In February, the ENC Theatre Department will present Stories of God, a theatrical adaptation of Rainer Maria Rilke’s book featuring children’s stories.

The play is based on Rilke’s book, which is said to have been inspired by a trip the Bohemian poet made to Russia in 1899. Stories of God will be performed in a unique “black box” setting, with the audience sitting on three sides of the stage.

“We are taking a playful, active approach to the stories, so children will be engaged,” Director Michael Ballard said. “But there is much of Rilke’s poetic language throughout, which should appeal to adults as well.”

Producer Tara Brooke Watkins (02) agreed. “The interconnected tales reflect the spirituality of the simple Russian people Rilke met on his journey,” she said. “The stories reflect the powerful imagery of Rilke’s later poetry, yet they have a folktale quality that makes them accessible to audiences of all ages.”

Ballard also noted that Stories of God takes a “story theatre,” or storytelling, approach. “I directed another story theatre piece six years ago and believe it is a very creative way to tell and stage stories,” he said. “In this piece, I am drawn to the blend of folktale, theology and poetry in the stories.”

Stories of God is at 7:30pm February 16-18 at the Cove Fine Arts Center. Tickets are $10 general admission, $7 for students, and $5 for ENC students and children 12 and under. For tickets or more information, call the ENC box office at 617-745-3715 or visit
