Published: September 4, 2013
Eastern Nazarene College has named Laurie Giles, JD as executive director of the Center for Responsibility and Justice (CRJ).
An assistant professor in ENC’s Psychology and Crime, Law, and Justice Department, Giles will oversee the center’s programs that promote awareness and understanding of social justice issues.
“Professor Giles brings a wealth of experience both as a practicing attorney and with community and social justice issues,” President Dr. Corlis McGee said. “Her expertise will prove invaluable in helping our students find meaningful ways to address issues of inequality and injustice.”
McGee noted that Giles has served as the co-chair for the U.S. Justice Department Conveyed Community Task Force, which addressed community/police relations and conflicts related to racial profiling, discriminatory practices and procedures. She has also served as an ethics commissioner for the town of Trumbull, Conn. and as an associate general counsel for the Connecticut Conference of NAACP branches, working in areas of community-based civil rights and equal justice initiatives.
Giles said she plans to initiate several new CRJ programs, including a partnership with the Boston Public Schools, peer mentoring and a social justice literary journal.
“Education will be a key focus of our CRJ initiatives,” Giles said. “Through our efforts, we aim to increase the success rate of students from underserved and underrepresented populations and advocate for educational equality.”
A Braintree resident, Giles has more than 20 years of experience working in the areas of criminal defense, family law, trusts and estates, elder law, education law, employment discrimination and family mediation. She has taught at Springfield College and the University of Bridgeport School of Law, and serves as both host and executive producer of iThink Radio, ENC’s weekly radio program that airs on WEZE 590AM.
