Professor Bill McCoy Receives Doctorate in African History

Bill McCoy,Assistant Professor of History, received his PhD in African History from Boston University on February 6, 2015 after successfully defending his dissertation entitled “Healing the Leper? Mission Christianity, Medicine, and Social Dependency in Twentieth-Century Swaziland”.

Significant portions of the research were completed in conjunction with a History of Medical Missions course he ran with ENC students on two occasions in Manzini in Swaziland. The class worked to archive and preserve a significant collection of historical files at Raleigh Fitkin Memorial Hospital. Dr. McCoy also stayed in Swaziland for several months in 2010, conducting interviews with locals associated with leprosy work including former patients, family members, and hospital employees.

Dr. McCoy has presented on his topic several times, including at The American Historical Association in Chicagoand the ENC Academic Symposium,and has published inStudies in World Christianitythrough Edinburgh University.
