ENC Provost Dr. Timothy Wooster is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Julie C. Best as Instructor in the Religion and Philosophy Department, the appointment of Laura Smith as Instructor in the Biology Department for the spring semester, and the appointment of Mackenzie Arment as Instructor in the Exercise and Sports Science Department for the spring semester and interim Head Women’s Soccer Coach.
Dr. Julie C. Best – Instructor, Religion and Philosophy
Dr. Best, a native of California, graduated from Point Loma Nazarene University, where she studied Applied Communications and Single Subject Credentialing for Secondary Education in English. She received a Master of Arts with a cross cultural concentration from Fuller Theological Seminar and a Master of Arts in Intercultural Studies/Missions from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois. She also holds a Master of Divinity from the Fuller Theological Seminary where she is working toward a Ph.D in Practical Theology with a Church History Minor.
Julie’s ministry experience includes missionary service, bi-vocational pastoral ministry and chaplaincy to graduate students. A California native, Julie was ordained on her home district in Los Angeles in May of 2004 and has served there as a bi-vocational pastor at the Azusa Church of the Nazarene, and as Associate Pastor of Spiritual Formation at Pasadena First Church of the Nazarene. She has also served as a member of Los Angeles Board of Ministry overseeing ministerial candidates preparing for ordination. As a chaplain, she ministered at both the Graduate Schools of Education at Azusa Pacific and Point Loma Nazarene Universities. Professor Best’s career as an educator includes both domestic and foreign experience. She has taught English in both college preparatory and in intensive language programs at Azusa Pacific University and at UCLA Extension. Her overseas work led her to Hungary where she taught English and networked for Nazarene World Missions and also to Busingen, Germany where she taught at European Nazarene Bible College.
Laura Smith – Instructor, Biology
Ms. Smith returns to ENC after graduation in 2012 with a BS in biochemistry. Her drive toward excellence was apparent while she was a student here and she contributed to the Biology Department in the Shrader Club as a Lab Assistant and as a Chemical Stockroom Assistant.
She earned an MS in Human Genetics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health. With research experience at the Children’s Hospital at Pittsburgh, and the UPMC Presbyterian Hospital’s Department of Neurology, students will benefit from her knowledge and work ethic. She is certified in lab safety, biohazard safety, and animal handling.
Mackenzie Arment – Instructor, Exercise and Sports Science; Interim Head Women’s Soccer Coach
Mr. Arment received his BS in Kinesiology and Movement Science from Penn. State. Also a certified NASM personal trainer, his credentials offer the Exercise and Sports Science further expertise. He expects to earn his MSM from ENC this spring. He contributes his energy and ambition off the field through fund raising for pediatric cancer and the Make-A-Wish program.
On the soccer field, he was a four-time Big Ten All-Academic honoree and a unanimous selection to the Big Ten All-Freshman team in 2008. After a one-year stint as an assistant high school boys’ soccer coach in Manheim, PA, he spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach with the men’s soccer team under head coach, Dan Visser.
