Eastern Nazarene College was among a select group of colleges to receive a national grant to explore and address issues of campus gender-based violence.
Awarded by the Avon Foundation for Women, the “Changing the Narrative on Campus Gender-based Violence” grant enabled ENC faculty, administrators and security personnel to attend a two-day National Leadership Institute conference in Boston designed to help colleges develop plans for preventing and addressing gender-based violence and sexual assaults on college and university campuses across America. ENC was one of just 20 colleges nationwide selected to receive the grant.
“We were pleased to have an opportunity to participate in a national dialogue on this important issue,” said Jeffrey Kirksey, vice president of student development. “The conference curriculum will help equip our faculty and staff with the tools they need to ensure a campus environment that is safe and welcoming for all students.”
Designed and implemented by Futures Without Violence in collaboration with the Gender Violence Program at Harvard Law School and the University of Virginia’s Curry School of Education, the National Leadership Institute provides colleges and universities with an opportunity to learn about best practices and work with their colleagues to identify strategies and develop an action plan for their own institution. Topics covered by the curriculum include fundamentals of gender-based violence and trauma; campus cultures and climate; prevention and education; and college response, policy and adjudication.
“The Avon Foundation has funded campus-based campaigns and bystander intervention initiatives for more than five years to help change behaviors around sexual assault,” said Christine Jaworsky, Avon Foundation program director. “We see the National Leadership Institute as an innovative opportunity for students and schools to take the lead in shifting the conversation around gender-based violence in the campus setting, but also in the broader dialogue around sexual and domestic violence in our society.”
Upon completion of the curriculum, ENC will receive $10,000 to implement an action plan to address issues of campus gender-based violence. “We anticipate that our action plan will include developing and implementing a campus climate survey that can guide our campus education practices for students and employees,” Kirksey said. “We also would like to offer specialized training in victim care and incident adjudication to our faculty and staff.”
