Hip hop choreography and rock gospel music will be among the highlights of the Eastern Nazarene College Theatre Department’s production of “This Wiz.”
To be presented Thursday, Oct. 13 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 15 at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at the Cove Fine Arts Center, the musical will combine elements of rock gospel music and hip hop in this urban retelling of The Wizard of Oz.
“We are blessed at ENC to have such a culturally diverse student body,” Director Tara Brooke Watkins said. “We have done several plays in the last few years that highlight different cultures and spotlight our multi-ethnic talent, but as yet, ENC had never done a musical that does the same. I’m excited to bring that diversity to our annual musical.”
As with the original story, Watkins said, ENC’s “The Wiz” will focus on the concept of the journey a young person takes to finding him or herself and a home.
“We will be using original drawings projected on a screen, designed by Michael Ballard,” Watkins said. “Set pieces reminiscent of children’s building blocks will be used to create the various puzzled-together scenes in addition to the technological projections.”
The show’s music will be directed by ENC Gospel Choir Director David Coleman, while Juanita Pearl will serve as choreographer. “Juanita has extensive training in hip-hop style choreography,” Watkins said, “and has worked in various capacities all over Boston.”
