Biology Lecture on Coastal Waterbird Program

November 7, 2011

ENC and the Biology Department will present a free lecture open to the public on the Massachusetts Audubon Society’s Coastal Waterbird Program at 1 p.m. Tuesday November 15 in Shrader Lecture Hall.

Dr. Katharine Parsons, director of the Coastal Waterbird Program (CWP), will discuss Mass Audubon’s coastal bird protection efforts and explain some of the successes and challenges of restoring plover and tern populations in Massachusetts.

Launched in 1987, the Coastal Waterbird Program has partnered with the government, private and public landowners and the public in order to protect species’ nesting grounds. During the course of the program, one of the species, the Piping Plover, has increased significantly. The program also monitors 130 sites on the Massachusetts coastline in order to protect the most threatened species of nesting birds.
