Meghan Holden (’14) Volunteers at New England Aquarium

Published: February 4, 2013

Meghan Holden (’14), an Environmental Science Major from Stoneham, MA, is spending time volunteering in the Marine Mammals Department at the New England Aquarium in Boston, MA.
She applied to volunteer at the New England Aquarium to gain more experience and get to know professionals within an animal husbandry and behavior career. Holden noted that the application and double interview process was more than she expected for a volunteering position, but appreciated the added exposure to the interviewing process.
As a volunteer she works in the fish prep room, preparing the feed buckets for the 14 seals the department manages. In addition to the necessary cleaning, Holden participates in animal enrichment by creating toys and conducting enrichment sessions. She also acts as a docent at the Harbor Seal exhibit, conducting an informational pre-show talk.
“I’m learning so much about animal care and training, but I also get an inside view on what it is like working for an organization like the aquarium. It’s definitely helping me narrow my focus, and gain professional experience. It’s also a lot of fun.” Holden said about her time at the New England Aquarium.
At ENC, Holden is a Lab Assistant and Publicity Assistant for the Department of Biology and Chemistry, and a member of the Animal Caretakers Team.
Holden entered ENC as an Environmental Science Major and never looked back. She is minoring in Communication Arts and Journalism. While she is not entirely sure what exactly she wants for a future career, she is certain it will somehow involve animals.
