History Department Presents Lecture on ‘Godless Europe, Religious America’
Published: September 30, 2011
The ENC History Department will present a free lecture at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, October 14, by Harvard Divinity School Professor David N. Hempton in the Student Center Auditorium in the Mann Student Center, as part of the department’s Fall History Lecture Series.
Titled “Godless Europe, Religious America: Comparative Secularization, 1750-2000,” the lecture will draw on Hempton’s research and interest in religion as well as pop culture, identity and ethics conflicts.
Prior to joining Harvard University in 2007, Hempton served as University Professor and Professor of the History of Christianity at Boston University and Professor of Modern History and Director of the Queen’s University of Belfast. He is currently teaching “Colloquium in American Religious History” and “Encountering the Other: The Expansion of the Christian West, 1650-1850.”
As a social historian his focus has been on religion, particularly evangelism in North America and Europe. He is the author of many books, including: Methodism and Politics in British Society, 1750-1850 (Stanford, 1984); Evangelical Protestantism in Ulster Society, 1740-1890 (Routledge, 1992); Religion and Political Culture in Britain and Ireland (Cambridge, 1996); The Religion of the People (Routledge, 1996); Evangelical Disenchantment (Yale, 2008); and The Church in the Long Eighteenth Century (Tauris, 2011).
