ENC to present free lecture by historian Larry Friedman

Published: March 16, 2010

Eastern Nazarene College will present a free lecture by noted historian Lawrence J. “Larry” Friedman as part of its ongoing Public Lecture Series.

Presented by the college’s Psychology and History departments, the lecture will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday April 8 in ENC’s Shrader Hall. The topic of Friedman’s lecture is “Love’s Prophet: The Lives of Erich Fromm,” an exploration of one of the world’s most popular psychologists and public intellectuals.

An accomplished history professor and author, Friedman taught history and philanthropic studies at Indiana University for 13 years before retiring in 2006. He had previously taught history at Arizona State University and Bowling Green State University and served as a visiting scholar in the history of science department at Harvard University.

The recipient of three research fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Friedman has published numerous books, including The White Savage: Racial Fantasies in the Postbellum South and Gregarious Saints: Self and Community in American Abolitionism, 1830-1870. He is a fellow of the Society of American Historians and was honored with a Fulbright Distinguished Chair to Germany in 2001.

The ENC History Department Public Lecture Series is made possible by the support of ENC alumni.
