ENC Theatre Department to present Nobel Laureate Derek Walcott’s ‘Ti-Jean and His Brothers’
Published: January 26, 2016
The Eastern Nazarene College Theatre Department will celebrate Black History Month by presenting Ti-Jean and His Brothers: A Caribbean Folk Tale Feb. 18-20 at 7:30 p.m. at the Cove Fine Arts Center on the college’s main campus in Wollaston.
Written by Nobel Prize-winning author Derek Walcott, the play explores the age-old struggle between good and evil, God and the devil, and what it means to be human.
The play tells the story of three brothers who live in poverty with their mother in the rainforest in the West Indies. The family’s faith is tested when the devil promises to ease their hardship and give them all they desire: Shall they attempt to outwit the devil through their own wits or make use of the gifts God has given them to defeat him?
Director Tara Brooke Watkins said the play’s set will enhance the story, with pieces of wood and bamboo filling the stage to create a rainforest. “The pieces will move to create different pathways for each of the brothers’ journeys,” she said. “The play’s animals will reflect the tradition of Trinidadian carnivale, with bright colors such as lime green, turquoise, tangerine and watermelon.”
Because the play is folk tale, she added, “the play will look like it’s a story within a story.”
Tickets for Ti-Jean and His Brothers are $10 general admission, $8 students and seniors. For tickets or more information, call the ENC box office at 617-745-3715 or visit www.brownpapertickets.com.
