Eastern Nazarene College celebrates new financial aid strategy
Published: November 19, 2010
Eastern Nazarene College recognized five years ago that the ENC student debt load was too high. In order for ENC to better serve our students, we actively engaged in addressing our awarding of scholarships by introducing a new financial aid strategy that was focused on student need.
Key aspects of this new strategy include:
• Holding tuition costs down
• Increased financial aid counseling for students and parents
• Increased institutional aid in the form of:
o Increased academic scholarships
o Addition of a need-based scholarship component
Positive Student Outcomes
The benefits to our students have been significant. Incoming freshmen received an average increase of 58.4% in their institutional aid award. This was due to an increase of 1.4 million dollars in the institutional aid budget between Fall 2006 and Fall 2009.
Over this same time period, the incoming freshman student debt load has decreased significantly by 17.5%. Through wise financial aid counseling, students took greater advantage of lower interest federal loan programs resulting in the average private loan for incoming freshman decreasing by 77%.
