In our crazed, digital world of smartphones and apps, adult college students want technology to help them get through their degree programs successfully. After all, they are working all day, balancing life, work and family commitments, and a college program thrown in means, a little support comes in handy. Whether you use these for productivity and organization, research, studying, writing or something else, all of these below are sure to be a big hit. The best part is, they’re easy to use and most are free!
Reading and writing are the fabric of any degree program. Whether you’re an amazing journalist or a rookie, it doesn’t matter. This is a great tool to use for all of us who care about correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling. You know your professors will care about those sorts of things. Grammarly is a browser-based extension that once installed checks your writing on the fly. It will help you catch those errors on last minute assignments you have been putting off. It’s so easy. When it identifies an error, to the right you will see the correct option and all you do is select it and move on. Yes, it’s that simple. You can also copy your work and paste it into the Grammarly editor and it works immediately. In fact, I am using it now.
If you’re like most people, work isn’t produced in one place or even on one device. If you want to have access to your work anywhere you go, yes, even on your smartphone, Google Drive is an easy to use, free service that allows you to upload and share files. It’s so simple; once you start you may never use anything else. It will help you stay organized with folders and files, and allows you to make changes on the fly. This is great for project initiatives that require you to share your work or other files with people in your class. Or, you may be working on a project that you may start one day on your laptop and because you’re on the run, you may finish it another day on your iPad or even on your personal desktop at home. Regardless of what smart computing device you use, Google Drive is an excellent way to keep it accessible for yourself and for your co-workers. All you need is a Gmail account to start.
As an adult college student, presentations are the norm. Have you ever wondered how a presentation goes from ho-hum to amazing? –Layout, graphics and design of course. Canva is a fantastic program that is perfect for creating amazing graphics for all sorts of things from presentations, to social media, print and so much more more. Pretty much anything you can dream up, Canva has it covered. And don’t worry, you don’t have to be a designer. Canva provides design templates and visual elements so that your imagination can run wild.
In a Bachelor’s or Master’s college degree program there are going to be lots of tasks every week. Yes, some of them will be daunting to say the least. So, how do you keep it all well organized so that you don’t have a meltdown? Great question… here’s a potential solution that just may do the trick. Organization is critical to keep your project assignments easily accessible and less stressful when you need to find them. Also, because project team collaboration is part of every degree program, you will want to have an app that can handle that as well. Slack is a fantastic tool for keeping the moving parts organized with group conversations, messages and calls as you move through assignments and projects with other members of your team. And the best thing is, you can easily use this on your smartphone. Now that’s convenient.
Although iBooks is just for iPhone, iPad and OS desktop computing, it’s a great tool to use for storing eBooks, papers, novels and textbooks. It’s easy to use and also easy to access each book. Here is the best part. You won’t ever have to carry those heavy textbooks ever again. You can also create “Collections” which helps you to group your content by topic. This is very helpful when lots of material will be used for your degree programs and you will want to access them by topic quickly and easily.
Sometimes adult college students need a little extra inspiration from other professionals. TED is an amazing resource where you can watch pretty much any topical video of your choice. Most of the people on TED are high-profile influencers in their field, so be prepared to be educated, motivated and inspired. You just may be surprised at what you find on a TED talk. But go ahead and check it out, you will be glad you did.
You may not have the time to review and download all 6 apps because you’re so slammed with work and school, yeah, I get it. All the more reason why you need to take a look at these! They are time savers, energizers, communicators, organizers and teachers – how in the world can you not want those in your life? Especially as an adult college student, balancing the world on your shoulders.
