93rd Commencement Exercises – May 8-9, 2015

UPDATE: Eastern Nazarene College graduates celebrated the 93rd Commencement Exercises on a picture-perfect May 9 at the Wollaston campus. The May 8 Baccalaureate service for the traditional undergraduate program featured a sermon from Chaplain and Vice President for Spiritual Development Corey MacPherson with scripture from John’s Gospel on remaining in the love of God throughout life.

On Saturday, May 9, graduates received associate’s, bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Alumnus Daniel Chung (85, 88) was the commencement speaker, encouraging graduates to not underestimate how God can use them throughout their careers and lives. Outstanding Senior Awards were given to history majors Maegan Bourne and Jake McAuliffe, the Outstanding Undergraduate Student in Adult Studies was Sandrine Pires, the Outstanding Graduate Student in Adult Studies was Joan Ford and the Outstanding Graduate in the Marriage and Family Therapy program was Valerie Coyle (in absentia). Faculty members Lambert Brandes (music) and Dr. Nancy Detwiler (athletics) were named Professor Emeritus/a.

Eastern Nazarene College will hold its spring commencement exercises on the college’s front lawn at 2:30pm on Saturday May 9, when graduates will receive associate’s, bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Guest speaker at this year’s commencement will be alumnus Daniel C. Chung (85, 88). The college will also hold a Baccalaureate service for graduates and families on May 8 at 7:00pm at the Wollaston Church of the Nazarene. Directions – East Elm Campus and Old Colony Campuses

Parking space is limited surrounding the college, so please plan for extra time. Additional parking will be provided on May 9 at the Old Colony Campus and a shuttle service will be provided beginning at 12:00pm until the start of the ceremony, and will run following the ceremony as needed.

Guest Speaker Bio
Chung has enjoyed a long career in ophthalmology and genetic research and currently serves as medical affairs ophthalmic lead for Spark Therapeutics, Inc., a biotech company engaged in gene therapy for retinal blindness. Spark was founded by the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), where Chung served as a clinical advisor, instructor and senior research investigator at the University of Pennsylvania’s FM Kirby Center for Molecular Ophthalmology at the Scheie Eye Institute. In this role, he was an integral participant in the hospital’s Retinal Gene Therapy Clinical Trial Team attempting to find gene-based cures for childhood blindness. The CHOP gene therapy team was the first to successfully restore vision in children with a blinding congenital disease.

After receiving a BS in Biology (1985) and MA in Family Counseling (1988) from ENC, Chung went on to the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine from 1990-1994. He was then selected as an Intramural Research Training Award Fellow at the National Eye Institute/National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, for work in ocular gene therapy. He went on to an internship and residency in ophthalmology in Akron, Ohio and completed a clinical fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology and a research fellowship in ocular genetics at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.

Chung has published numerous papers, abstracts and reviews, presents annually at national meetings, has been an invited lecturer both nationally and internationally, and holds grants from foundations and the National Institutes of Health. He has served as a member of the ENC Alumni Council and ENC Board of Trustees, and in 2010 received the college’s Alumni Achievement Award.
