Residential Living
Residence hall living is regarded to be one of the most valuable college experiences. Eastern Nazarene College maintains single-sex dormitories with limited visitation hours through weekly open houses. The Student Development Office strives to create and maintain an atmosphere in the residence halls that will help students grow spiritually, academically, emotionally, and socially. A major goal is to help students learn life skills that will be needed outside the college community. Non-local students are required to room in the college dormitories and board in the college dining hall except by special permission from the Residential Life Committee and the Vice President for Student Development. In cases where such permission is given, the college reserves the right to designate the place of residence and will hold such students responsible for compliance with the rules and regulations of the college.
Resident Directors and Assistants
An adult resident director (“RD”) lives in each residence hall. He or She is responsible for creating and maintaining an environment for the best development of each resident. They all are available for counsel and advice. In addition, a student resident assistant (“RA”) resides on each floor of every resident hall. These assistants are upper-class students employed to assist resident directors in creating a pleasant atmosphere in the resident halls.
Residence Hall Hours and Room Visitation
Freshmen students are expected to be in their dormitory between 12:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and between 1:00 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. Students in violation of curfew are subject to fines and/or other disciplinary action. All freshmen are required to sign in at their resident assistant's door when in for the evening. The system is designed to give the student freedom while demonstrating personal honesty, discipline, and responsibility.
The Associated Men Students (AMS) and Associated Women Students (AWS) of the College sponsor regular residence hall visitations at times announced and published on campus. Typically these are scheduled weekly. Visitation in residence halls at other times by members of the opposite sex is prohibited, except as approved by the resident director of the dormitory or in the parlor area.
Quiet hours in the residence halls are from 10 p.m. until 7 a.m. during the semester and around-the-clock during all examination periods. Reasonable quiet is expected from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m. when individuals may be studying or sleeping.
Room Assignments and Occupancy
Rooms are assigned by seniority each spring. Upperclass students may keep their same room from year to year if they wish. The college reserves the right to make room and roommate assignments and to terminate the housing contract. The college also may change room assignments whenever this seems to be in the best interest of the students and/or the college community. Student-initiated room changes must first be approved by the Director of Residential Life. Except in extreme emergencies, no room changes are made in the first three weeks of the semester. The college reserves the right to inspect, assign, and reassign rooms, and to take any other steps necessary or advisable for reasons of health, safety, or conduct of its residence hall program. If a vacancy should occur in a room, the college may assign an alternate roommate.
